ER Search engine is a new concept in search engines. Published by Evolution Robotics and Bandai Networks, the engine asks you to take a picture of any object you wish to be the subject of your search, said Business Wire: a book, DVD case, CD and so on. ER Search is already active in Japan on over 1 million phones.

Ecocho.co.uk prides itself in being the first free green search engine in the world, offsetting carbon emissions at no cost to the user. It was recently launched in the UK along with 14 other countries all over the world, and is powered by both Google and Yahoo!. This Australian initiative was specially designed to combat environmental change by sponsoring the planting of two trees for every 1,000 searches made.

Microsoft Acquires Farecast (for $115M) – smart travel search engine. Farecast is an airfare pricing comparision tool that also uses a predictive algorithm to recommend when you buy your ticket. So the idea is to show the user not just who has the cheapest ticket, but whether or not waiting might make sense as well. The site has also guarantees tickets at its predicted prices for an extra charge. As of this past fall, it also began helping travelers determine the fairness of hotel pricing.
